Blood Type Testing

ABO and RH Blood Types

Blood types are categorized based on the antigen present or absent on the surface of the red blood cells. This antigen varies from person to person hence becomes a marker for blood typing. There are categories of ABO blood typing systems:

  • Type A contains A antigen
  • Type B contains B antigen
  • Type AB has both antigens A and B
  • Type O contains neither A nor B antigen

Additionally, blood groups can be distinguished based on the presence or absence of an RH antigen.

  • Rh-positive blood has Rh antigens attached to the red blood cells.
  • Rh-negative blood does not have Rh antigens attached to the red blood cells.

The Significance of Blood Type Testing

Your ABO and RH blood type is crucial medical information especially for medical procedures that involve blood transfusion and organ transplants. Infusing an incompatible blood type can cause fatal consequences.

Why should you get tested?

An appropriate blood type test allows you to know your own blood type without going through unnecessary complications. It will also save you a significant amount of time when you undergo a medical procedure.
