Anemia Profile Blood Test

* This is not a home test kit. You will need to visit a local lab for testing.

The Purpose of an Anemia Panel

Are you always exhausted but unsure why? Anemia could be the culprit. This condition is characterized by low levels of hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells that’s needed to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body.

There are many types of anemia, such as iron deficiency anemia and sickle cell anemia, as well as multiple factors that can contribute to anemia, including vitamin deficiency, pregnancy, inflammation, age, or genetic predisposition, among others. Because chronic anemia can lead to debilitating fatigue or heart problems, it’s important to monitor your health with an anemia panel blood test.

What Does the Anemia Panel Test Measure?

An anemia profile actually tests several markers to determine if you have a healthy red blood cell and hemoglobin count. In addition to a complete blood count (CBC) with differential/platelet count for an overview of your blood health, anemia panel labs also analyze:

Who Should Take an Anemia Panel Test?

You may want to be tested if you’re experiencing common anemia symptoms, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Chills
  • Dizziness upon standing
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Shortness of breath
  • Unusually pale skin
  • Swollen tongue

An anemia panel may also be recommended if you have risk factors or conditions associated with anemia, such as pregnancy or disorders that affect red blood cell production.

Anemia Panel Blood Test Preparation

You must fast for 12 hours prior to the blood draw for your anemia profile.

Anemia Profile Blood Test Results

The normal ranges will vary for each marker that’s been tested. Low levels can point to anemia or an iron or vitamin deficiency, while high levels may indicate potential liver disease. You may need to undergo more testing and consider lifestyle modifications such as dietary changes. Women should keep in mind that menstruation can affect red blood cell levels.
