Aldolase Blood Test

* This is not a home test kit. You will need to visit a local lab for testing.

Product is not a lab test

Purpose of the Aldolase Test

Aldolase is an enzyme found in your skeletal muscles, liver, and brain. Your body relies on aldolase to function because it breaks down sugars to generate the energy you need for daily life. Testing your aldolase levels can help diagnose muscle and liver damage or diseases.

What Does the Aldolase Lab Test Measure?

An aldolase test measures the amount of aldolase in your blood. When muscles or the liver are damaged, their cells release large quantities of aldolase into the bloodstream, which is more than the body needs to function.

Who Should Take an Aldolase Blood Test?

Aldolase labs are recommended for:

  • Pinpointing or monitoring inherited muscle diseases such as muscular dystrophy or uncommon muscle disorders such as polymyositis and dermatomyositis.
  • Assessing or checking for liver damage caused by cancer, injury, or diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or mononucleosis.

These tests are usually ordered in conjunction with:

You can find all these tests, and more, at Personalabs.

Aldolase Test Preparation

It’s generally advised that you don’t eat or drink 6 to 12 hours prior to the aldolase blood test. You may be asked to avoid intense exercise 12 hours before the test.

Some prescription and non-prescription drugs can affect blood test results. Your doctor will advise you on stopping any medication that may interfere with the test.

Aldolase Lab Results

For aldolase, a normal range is 1.0 to 7.5 units per liter (0.02 to 0.13 microkat/L), though it can vary slightly between laboratories. A physician can help you analyze your test results.

If aldolase is high, those abnormal results could indicate muscle or liver disease. Low aldolase levels are considered normal. High levels may require further testing to check muscle health or liver function.
