Mold Allergy Test Panel

* This is not a home test kit. You will need to visit a local lab for testing.

Also Known As: Allergen Profile Mold

Purpose of the Mold Allergy Test

Mold allergy testing helps diagnose allergy of molds, a type of microscopic fungi found everywhere. Getting results beyond the normal range or test value confirms the allergy, which can be managed by taking an antihistamine drug.

What Does the Mold Blood Test Measure?

The mold panel blood test screens immunoglobulin E (IgE), an antibody produced in high amounts when allergens are present. In this case, mold spores are the allergens, triggering the allergic immune response.

Tests included in a mold allergy panel depend on the lab procedure and facility that processes the blood samples. Check out the different mold species assessed in the profile from our partner patient centers.

Quest Diagnostics

  • Alternaria alternata
  • Aspergillus fumigatus
  • Cladosporium herbarum
  • Mucor racemosus
  • Penicillium notatum
  • Stemphylium botryosum

Labcorp

  • Alternaria alternata
  • Aspergillus fumigatus
  • Aureobasidium pullulans
  • Candida albicans
  • Cladosporium herbarum
  • Epicoccum purpurascens
  • Fusarium proliferatum
  • Mucor racemosus
  • Penicillium chrysogenum
  • Phoma betae
  • Setomelanomma rostrata
  • Stemphylium herbarum

These mold species are introduced as specific allergens. Afterward, the amount of IgE is measured.

Who Should Take a Blood Test for Mold Allergy?

Take a mold allergy test if you’re experiencing symptoms frequently or for more than two weeks. Let your doctor know if you have been exposed to molds indoors or outdoors to confirm the causal connection.

Mold allergy symptoms commonly include:

  • Nasal congestion (rhinitis)
  • Watery eyes
  • Dry and scaly skin
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sneezing and wheezing
  • Itchiness in the eyes, throat, and nose

Choosing not to test for mold allergy raises your risk of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening shock caused by allergies. This leads to low blood pressure, weak pulse, breathing difficulty, narrow airways, severe digestive distress, rapid skin rash,  and even death. Thus, consult your doctor at the onset of the allergy symptoms.

Blood Test for Mold Preparation

No special preparation is necessary before blood sample collection.

Mold Panel Blood Test Results

The test report shows the IgE level for each mold type. If the allergy test results show a value higher than 0.10 kU/L, it suggests abnormal levels of the IgE antibodies, which in turn confirms the allergic reaction. Your doctor will subsequently prescribe antihistamine medication to manage the symptoms.
