CA 125 Blood Test

Also Known As

CA 125 Tumor Marker, Cancer Antigen 125, Glycoprotein Antigen, Ovarian Cancer Antigen

The Purpose of a CA 125 Test

Cancer antigen 125 (also called CA 125) is often associated with ovarian cancer tumors. While a blood test for CA 125 can’t be used on its own as a screening tool for ovarian cancer for women with low risk for the disease, it can be used to help women with high risk factors, such as a family history or the presence of the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 genes. It can also help monitor for cancer recurrence in women who have undergone treatment for ovarian cancer or are in remission.

What Does the CA 125 Lab Measure?

The blood test detects the level of CA 125 in your body. High levels can indicate a potential health problem and merit further testing.

Who Should Take a Blood Test for CA 125?

Women may get a CA 125 lab if they have had ovarian cancer or if they are at high risk. Because there isn’t an official screening test for ovarian cancer, your physician may order CA 125 blood work if you have symptoms linked to ovarian cancer, including pelvic pain, bloating, and fatigue.

CA 125 Blood Work Preparation

No special preparation is required for a CA 125 test.

CA 125 Lab Test Results

There are variations in normal CA 125 levels depending on the type of test. However, results over 35 U/mL are considered high. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have ovarian cancer; other conditions that can cause high CA 125 levels include uterine fibroids, liver disease, and endometriosis, among others. You’ll want to discuss your results with your physician to map out your next steps. If you need a physician, schedule a telehealth visit with one of our board-certified doctors.
