G6PD, Quantitative, Blood and Red Blood Cell Count (RBC) Blood Test

* This is not a home test kit. You will need to visit a local lab for testing.

The Purpose of a G6PD RBC Count Blood Test

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in protecting red blood cells from oxidative stress by producing a molecule called reduced glutathione. G6PD deficiency is an inherited condition where the body does not produce enough of this enzyme, leading to vulnerability to oxidative stress. It can also raise the risk of hemolytic anemia, which is marked by symptoms such as jaundice, fatigue, and elevated heart rate. This deficiency can be triggered by certain medications, infections, or exposure to certain foods or chemicals.

What Does the G6PD Blood Test Measure?

The G6PD quantitative test measures the activity levels of the G6PD enzyme in red blood cells.

Who Should Take a G6PD Lab Test?

The G6PD blood test is primarily performed in people who exhibit symptoms or risk factors associated with G6PD deficiency. These risk factors may include a family history of G6PD deficiency, ancestry from regions where the condition is common, or a known sensitivity to medications or certain foods that can trigger hemolytic anemia in individuals with G6PD deficiency. This test is also recommended for newborns, as G6PD deficiency can lead to severe jaundice in infants.

G6PD Quantitative Test Preparation

The blood test for G6PD doesn’t require any special preparations before visiting the lab for your appointment.

G6PD RBC Count Blood Test Results

A normal test result is 8.6 to 18.6 units per gram of hemoglobin tested. If your levels are 10% to 60% of that range, you may have hemolytic anemia, while less than 10% of a normal level means you have a chronic G6PD deficiency.
