HSV 1 is what is commonly referred to as “cold sores” whereas HSV 2 is known as genital herpes.
Symptoms of HSV 1 are:
- Blister on the lip and edge of the mouth
- A sore mouth that makes eating, drinking, and sleeping uncomfortable
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Drooling, in small children.
Genital herpes is a very common STD that is spread through sexual intercourse.
Since this primarily occurs without signs of any symptoms, individuals can have this and not know it. It is reported by the CDC that 1 in 5 U.S. teens or adults have genital herpes.
Since this test is testing for IgM antibodies it is for more recent exposure. IgM are the first antibodies that are produced in response to HSV infection. After the IgM antibody levels drop off IgG antibodies are then produced.
Please note this is a combination test, which means when you receive your test results back it will only give you a positive or negative. If the results comes back positive it will not indicate if the positive result is for HSV 1 or HSV 2.
