Fish Allergy Blood Testing: Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is a fish allergy the same as a shellfish allergy?
No. This is a common misconception. Fish (like Cod and Tuna) are vertebrates, while shellfish (like Shrimp, Crab, and Lobster) are invertebrates. Being allergic to fish does not automatically mean you are allergic to shellfish, and vice versa. However, because both are often served in the same restaurants, “cross-contamination” is a high risk.
2. How long does it take to get my fish allergy results?
Most results are available within 2 to 10 business days. You will receive an email notification as soon as your results are uploaded to your secure Personalabs portal.
3. Does this test check for all types of fish?
This specific profile tests for Cod, Salmon, and Tuna. These are used as “indicator species.” If you test positive for these, there is a very high statistical probability that you will also react to other fish like Tilapia, Trout, or Halibut due to protein similarities.
4. Can I take this test if I am currently having an allergic reaction?
It is generally recommended to wait until an acute reaction has subsided before testing. A massive reaction can temporarily “deplete” circulating IgE or, conversely, cause a spike that doesn’t represent your baseline. Consult with a healthcare provider if you have just experienced a severe reaction.
5. Is this test suitable for children?
Yes, blood testing is often preferred for children because it involves a single needle stick rather than the multiple “scratches” required for a skin prick test. It is also safer for children who may be unable to sit still for the 20-minute waiting period required for skin testing.
