Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) Blood Test

* This is not a home test kit. You will need to visit a local lab for testing.

Also Known As

AMH Hormone Test, MIF, MIH, MIS, Mullerian-Inhibiting Factor, Mullerian-Inhibiting Hormone, Mullerian-Inhibiting Substance

The Purpose of an AMH Test

The anti-mullerian (AMH) hormone is a vital component of a woman’s health. This hormone is produced in the ovaries as puberty begins.

AMH tests can help:

  • Indicate how many eggs a woman carries in her ovaries as part of fertility testing. (This is also called the ovarian reserve.)
  • Pinpoint the cause of irregular menstrual cycles.
  • Determine the reason for early menopause.
  • Diagnose polycystic ovarian syndrome.
  • Track some types of ovarian cancer.

What Does the Anti-Mullerian Hormone Test Measure?

This blood test will show the levels of AMH produced by your body.

Who Should Take an AMH Lab Test?

Women often undergo AMH testing when they are trying to get pregnant to see how many viable eggs they have, particularly if they are trying in vitro fertilization (IVF). A doctor may also use the test to monitor women with ovarian cancer or cysts or if there are other reproductive health issues that need to be diagnosed, such as the absence of menstrual cycles or painful menstruation. And you may want to be tested if you are experiencing symptoms linked to the polycystic ovarian syndrome, such as acne and unexplained weight gain.

AMH Blood Work Preparation

You don’t need to do any special preparation for an AMH blood test.

AMH Test Results

Test results typically fall into these general categories:

  • Very low: 0.4 ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter)
  • Low: Less than 1.0 ng/mL
  • Average: 1.0 to 3.0 ng/mL

Your levels can also vary by age. AMH production goes down as you get older, generally starting at 3.0 ng/mL in your mid-20s, decreasing to 1 ng/mL by age 40, then dropping to 0.5 ng/mL around age 45.

If you want to discuss your results with a board-certified physician, schedule a convenient telehealth visit with a Personalabs doctor.
