The Purpose of a Copper Serum Test

Your body requires copper for healthy brain development, immune system function, bone strength, and more. Normal copper levels can be thrown out of whack; however, if you don’t get enough copper in your diet or if your body can’t metabolize and excrete the mineral, which can build up to toxic levels in the tissues of the eyes, kidneys, and nervous system. (You can also get high copper levels through chronic environmental overexposure.) Abnormal copper levels can indicate health issues such as Wilson’s disease, chronic active hepatitis, liver or kidney disorders, and other medical conditions. These copper-related problems can trigger a variety of symptoms, depending on the underlying cause, and can also lead to organ damage if high copper levels aren’t addressed and treated. That’s when a copper serum blood test can be useful in getting you the answers you need.

What Does the Serum Copper Test Measure?

This test measures the amount of copper in your blood. The copper level blood test may be taken in conjunction with a ceruloplasmin test if you need to determine if you have Wilson’s disease or a problem with your liver function.

Who Should Take a Copper Serum Blood Test?

A serum copper test may be part of a workup if you’re being diagnosed or monitored for Wilson’s disease, chronic active hepatitis, liver disease, or similar conditions.

Copper Level Blood Test Preparation

You must fast for 12 hours and avoid alcohol for 24 hours before taking the copper serum test.

Copper Test Blood Results

Normal blood copper levels typically range from 62 to 140 micrograms per deciliter (mcg/dL). You may need more testing if your results are either too low or too high to determine if you have Wilson’s disease, a deficiency, anemia, kidney or liver disease, thyroid disorders, or other issues that may be related to copper. If you need further guidance after getting your results, Personalabs can help you schedule telehealth visits with our board-certified doctors.
