The Purpose of a Hepatitis B Profile Test

Do you think you’ve been exposed to hepatitis B? Then time is of the essence to get diagnosed and treated for this highly contagious form of viral hepatitis. Spread via bodily fluids, hepatitis B affects the liver and can either be a short-term illness or a chronic condition that poses serious health risks (including liver cancer and liver disease). The hepatitis B panel test measures several markers, making it the most comprehensive screening for hepatitis B.

What Does the Hep B Panel Test Measure?

The hep B profile blood test includes hepatitis B core antibody, hepatitis B surface antigen, and hepatitis B surface antibody. By including the hepatitis B core antibody test, the so-called core window is covered. This is a time period when the hepatitis B core antibody may be the only marker of a hepatitis B infection. Plus, having the test in the panel reduces the probability of a false negative occurring.

Who Should Take an HBV Profile Test?

Testing is often recommended if you’ve been exposed to someone with hepatitis B and have come into contact with their bodily fluids (such as during unprotected sex, sharing needles, etc.). The following are hepatitis B symptoms that could also call for a hepatitis B profile blood test:

  • Appetite loss
  • Decreased appetite
  • Jaundice
  • Fatigue
  • Stomach pain and nausea

You don’t have to follow special instructions before taking a hep B panel test.

Hepatitis B Panel Test Results

These tests look for the presence of antigens introduced when the hepatitis B virus enters the body, as well as antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the virus. A physician can use the results to determine whether you have hepatitis B.
