Abnormal triglyceride levels can be indicator of heart disease. These levels can be influenced risk factors such as cigarette smoking, hypertension, family history of heart disease, pre-existing heart disease or previous heart attack, men over the age of 45, women over the age of 55 and diabetes.
For adults, triglyceride test results are categorized as follows:
– Desirable: Less than 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L)
– Borderline high: 150 to 199 mg/dL (1.7-2.2 mmol/L)
– High: 200 to 499 mg/dL (2.3-5.6 mmol/L)
– Very high: Greater than 500 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L)
Routine checkup once every five years or more frequently if you are undergoing treatment for high triglycerides or have risk factors of heart disease; Diabetics as triglycerides increase when blood sugar levels or not managed well.
Fasting is required 12-14 hours prior to giving blood sample. Also, a stable diet for 2-3 weeks prior to testing is recommended.
