Blood Type Test - Lab Locations

Wondering where to go to find out your blood type? You can purchase a blood type test through Personalabs for only $52! This includes ABO Grouping and Rho(D) Typing.

The ABO test will tell you which type of blood you have. There are 4 blood types- A,B, AB, or O. If you are blood type A, you can donate to others who have blood types A and B and can only receive blood from those who are blood types A and O. If you are blood type B, you can donate to others who have blood types B and AB and can only receive blood from those who have blood types B and O. If you are blood type AB, you can only donate blood to those who have blood type AB, but you can receive any type of blood. If you are blood type O, you can donate blood to anyone, but can only receive blood from those who have blood type O.

The Rho(D) test checks for the Rh factor of red blood cells. If you have the Rh factor, your blood is Rh-positive and if you don’t, then your blood is Rh-negative. Together with the ABO test, you are able to determine your blood type. There are eight possible types: O+, O-, A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, and AB-.

Knowing your blood type plays a significant role when you need a blood transfusion or during a pregnancy to evaluate the risk of Rh incompatibility with the fetus. Blood typing prior to a blood transfusion ensures that you will receive the correct blood during surgery. If you do not receive a blood type that is compatible, it can be fatal. In regards to the Rh factor, if mother is Rh positive and the father is Rh negative, the baby and mother can have different blood types, which can also be fatal. There are medicines that prohibit the mother's blood cells attacking the baby's blood cells if the blood gets mixed, which is a process that usually happens during a pregnancy.
