Estrone (E1) Blood Test

* This is not a home test kit. You will need to visit a local lab for testing.

The Purpose of an Estrone Blood Test

This test focuses on one of the three main types of estrogen, a primary reproductive hormone. (The other two main forms of estrogen are estradiol, or E2, and estriol, or E3.) While estradiol is the predominant type of estrogen in people of reproductive age (and produced by people when they are pregnant),  estrone is notable because it is still produced by women after they have entered menopause. In premenopausal women, as well as men, it can also convert into estradiol. An estrone blood test could determine if you have an increased risk of menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes or low libido, which can be caused by low estrone; high levels, on the other hand, could contribute to reproductive cancers, such as in the breasts or uterus.

What Does the E1 Test Measure?

This test measures the levels of estrone, which is produced by your adrenal glands, ovaries, and fat deposits (also called adipose tissues) in your body.

Who Should Take an Estrone Test?

Women may want to take this test on its own or as part of an overall check of their estrogen levels to monitor their reproductive health. They may also benefit from an E1 test if they are suffering symptoms associated with perimenopause or menopause.

Estrone Lab Test Preparation

There are no special precautions you need to take before the estrone test.

Estrone Blood Test Results

If you are premenopausal, your estrone results should fall between 30 to 400 pg/mL to be classified as normal; for postmenopausal women, that ideal range is 0 to 30 pg/mL. (Men who may be taking this test as part of a hormone workup should have results between 10 and 50 pg/mL.)
