The Purpose of a Ferritin Test

Iron is an essential mineral for good health. You need adequate levels for your muscles, organs, and bone marrow to properly function, and iron is necessary for healthy red blood cells, too. But your iron levels need to stay balanced–if they’re too low or too high, it could lead to chronic disease or other health problems. A ferritin test provides crucial information on how much iron is in your body.

What Does the Ferritin Lab Test Measure?

A blood test for ferritin measures the iron levels in your body, spotting deficiencies or overload.

Who Should Take a Blood Test for Ferritin?

Your doctor may want to check your levels to monitor an iron-related medical condition. A ferritin blood test may also be helpful in finding a diagnosis if you experience symptoms associated with abnormal iron levels. Low iron may cause fatigue, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, or arrhythmia. High levels can lead to joint or stomach pain, fatigue, loss of libido, or changes to your skin color.

Ferritin Lab Test Preparation

No special preparation is required for the blood draw.

Blood Test Ferritin Results

With this blood test, ferritin levels are considered normal if they range from 24 to 336 micrograms per liter (men) and 11 to 307 micrograms per liter (women). Lower-than-normal levels may be a sign of anemia (iron-deficient blood). Elevated ferritin levels can indicate hyperthyroidism, liver disease, hemochromatosis, alcohol use disorder, or certain types of cancer, such as leukemia or Hodgkin’s lymphoma, among other health issues.
