Use:
PTH is secreted in response to decrease in serum calcium levels by increasing the renal reabsorption of calcium and lowering reabsorption of phosphorus.
Excess parathormone production can lead to elevated serum calcium levels causing osteoporosis, renal stones, and fractures. Parathormone deficiency can cause muscle spasms, tetatny and cardiac arrest.
The measurement of PTH is a very useful tool in the differential diagnosis and management of hypercalcemia.
Recommended For:
Diagnosing and monitoring parathryoid disorders, calcium levels; monitoring patients of kidney dialysis
