Fasting Lipoprotein Panel, Lipid Panel, TG, TRIG

The Purpose of a Triglycerides Test

The triglycerides test is used to evaluate the risk of developing heart disease. It is usually ordered as part of a lipid profile and measures the amount of triglycerides in your blood. Triglycerides are a type of fat often associated with arteriosclerosis, a condition where the artery walls thicken and harden, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Abnormal triglyceride levels can be an indicator of heart disease. These levels can be influenced by risk factors such as:

  • Smoking
  • Unhealthy weight
  • Poor diet and exercise habits
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • A family history of heart disease
  • Pre-existing heart disease or previous heart attack
  • Age (45 and older for men, 55 and older for women)

What Does the Blood Test for Triglycerides Measure?

A TRIG test measures the level of triglycerides in your blood.

Who Should Take a Triglycerides Lab Test?

A triglycerides blood test may be ordered as part of a heart health lipid panel, or it may be recommended if you have heart disease risk factors. Your doctor can also use this test to monitor your progress if you’re being treated for high triglycerides. People with diabetes may also take this test if their triglyceride levels are high because they have difficulty managing their blood sugar levels.

TG Blood Test Preparation

Fasting is required 12 to 14 hours prior to giving your blood sample. Also, a stable diet for two to three weeks prior to testing is recommended for the most accurate results.

Triglycerides Test Results

For adults, triglyceride lab test results are categorized as follows:

  • Desirable: Less than 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L)
  • Borderline high: 150 to 199 mg/dL (1.7-2.2 mmol/L)
  • High: 200 to 499 mg/dL (2.3-5.6 mmol/L)
  • Very high: Greater than 500 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L)

If, after getting your blood work, triglyceride levels are too high, you may need more heart health testing. If you’re unsure of your next steps, we can help–just book a telehealth appointment with one of our board-certified doctors to review your test results.
