Top 5 Lab Tests For Men

Medically Approved by Dr. Edward Salko

Table of Contents

When it comes to taking care of their personal health, American men are less likely to get regular health exams or monitor their health status than American women. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, nearly 26 percent of men in the United States do not have a regular source of healthcare.

An unfortunate consequence of their “put it off” behavior is that American men on average have a shorter life expectancy than American women. Research shows that:

  • American men under age 65 are three times more likely than women to die from heart attacks;
  • American men have a higher probability of developing cancer than American women, and are 1 1/2 times more likely than women to die from cancer. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for American men, killing two and one-half times more men than woman. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men;
  • American men are also nearly one and one-half times more likely than American women to die from diabetes.

Other health research indicates that American men’s life expectancy on average is 5 years shorter than the life expectancy for American women.

The good news is that American men can take control of their health and reduce their chances of getting seriously ill or dying prematurely by getting regular lab tests and blood tests to identify any tell-tale symptoms of developing heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or other life-threatening health conditions before it’s too late.

Recommended Men’s Health Lab Tests and Blood Tests

Personalabs is dedicated to helping men of all ages live long healthy lives and protect their health by making if fast, easy and affordable to monitor their key blood levels and biomarkers.

Our most popular men’s lab tests are:

  1. The Comprehensive Male Checkup Test and the Healthy Male Checkup Test.
  2. The Healthy Male Checkup Test is a comprehensive health assessment that checks one’s blood and urine for biomarkers that can indicate developing heart disease, diabetes mellitus, prostate cancer, and kidney disease.

The Personalabs Healthy Male Checkup Test will give you an overall picture of your health status with the following tests:

Apolipoprotein B Test – Apolipoprotein B is the major protein component of low density lipids (LDL cholesterol). It is known to be a major risk factor for atherosclerosis which in turn is the leading cause of heart attack.

CBC with differential and platelet count – a routine blood test that measures the levels of red and white blood cells and platelets, and screens for symptoms such as fatigue or bruising, diagnose disorders such as anemia and infection, and can monitor a variety of diseases that affect blood cells. It is usually ordered as part of a routine health exam and

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP 14) – a group of 14 specific tests designed to provide an overview of the functioning status of our vital organs and bodily fluids. Doctors generally recommend that a CMP Panel be included as part of one’s annual health checkup in order to keep tabs on one’s overall health and any red flags that could indicate a new or developing health condition.

The Personalabs CMP test evaluates the status of your kidneys, liver, and electrolyte and acid/base balance, as well as of your blood sugar and blood proteins. Once completed, you will receive a report showing both the normal “reference range” for biomarkers tested, such as blood sugar levels, protein levels, electrolyte levels, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, bilirubin, calcium, chloride, potassium, sodium, and how your test results compare to the recommended normal levels.

Lipid Panel – a test that is used to evaluate hyperlipidemia (an abnormally high concentration of fats or lipids in the blood) as an index to heart disease. The lipid panel can help determine if you have abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels that can put you at risk for heart disease.

C-Reactive Protein (cardiac CRP – high sensitivity) – a test that is used in conjunction with other tests to detect one’s risk of cardiovascular disease as well as a wide range of other disorders like inflammatory disease, autoimmune disorders, and chronic infections.

TSH test – a blood test used to evaluate thyroid function and diagnose thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). The pituitary gland produces TSH and helps the thyroid gland in producing T3 and T4 hormones, which help control metabolism, temperature and heart rate.

PSA – a test that is used to detect Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and is helpful in detecting prostate cancer. it is recommended that men age 50 and older get a PSA test yearly. Men who are experiencing symptoms such as painful or frequent urination or have a family history of prostate cancer, should get tested earlier.

TIBC Panel Blood Test – a test that measures the amount of iron in your blood and looks at how well the iron moves through your body. Iron is an important mineral your body uses to make hemoglobin, the protein in your red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout your body. It is also needed for proper muscle and organ function. About 3/4 of the body’s iron is bound to hemoglobin in red blood cells, while the rest is either bound to other proteins (transferrin in blood or ferritin in bone marrow) or stored in other body tissues.

Some symptoms associated with iron deficiency include fatigue, weakness, frequent infections, feeling cold all the time, tongue swelling. Some symptoms associated with iron overload are joint pain and abdominal pain.

Testosterone – a test that measures total serum testosterone and is required for the evaluation of several health conditions in men.

Urinalysis – a routine test that is used to evaluate or determine diabetes, urinary tract infections and kidney problems, as well as other infections. This test checks the urine pH, color, and appearance, as well as glucose, bilirubin, ketones, etc.
