Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH)

Cause

This test is designed to evaluate congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a hereditary disorder caused by genetic mutations that affect adrenal functions in producing essential hormones.

There are 2 types of CAH, the classic and the non-classic. Classic CAH is rare and can be detected as early as infancy while non-classic CAH is more common during childhood or adulthood. It has less severe symptoms.

 

Symptoms

Classic CAH

  1. Ambiguous genital for Female babies
  2. A deficient amount of cortisol
  3. Excessive male sex hormones
  4. The onset of pre-puberty pubic hair
  5. Short height despite growing quickly during childhood

Non-classic CAH

  1. The onset of pre-puberty pubic hair
  2. Short height despite growing quickly during childhood
  3. The appearance of masculine characteristics among females
  4. Absence of or irregular menstruation
