What Is the Purpose of the Iodine Test

Iodine is an essential mineral that you need for optimal health. In this case, your body requires iodine to produce thyroid hormones. If you have inadequate iodine levels, you may suffer from low or high thyroid production (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, respectively), conditions that can have negative health effects, including arrhythmia, weight loss/gain, depression, sleep disorders, and enlarged thyroid (or goiter). Low iodine is also dangerous for people who are pregnant because it can result in impaired physical or mental development in the baby and, in extreme cases, an increased risk of infant mortality.

What Does the Iodine Deficiency Test Measure?

This test measures your iodine levels. Your body can’t produce iodine on its own, so you need to get iodine in your daily diet via food or supplements. Adults typically need 150 mcg of iodine each day; pregnant women need 220 mcg, while breastfeeding women should get 290 mcg.

Who Should Take an Iodine Level Test?

Iodine tests can be part of your regular wellness checkups. If you are pregnant, it can also be a good idea to monitor your iodine levels. Your physician may recommend an iodine deficiency test as a follow-up to irregular TSHT3, T4, and other thyroid tests. But taking too much iodine can lead to toxicity; check your levels if you are experiencing symptoms such as a burning feeling in the mouth, throat, or stomach, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, fever, and low pulse rate.
